Paleo fast food?

When I'm doing a Whole30 I'll rarely eat out at restaurants.  However, I'm not doing a Whole30, but I was so pleasantly surprised to find out that our favourite burger place, Five Guys, who locally sources their beef and veg, are willing to serve patties salad style.

If they have enough lettuce, they'll even lettuce wrap your burger for you.  This was so delicious.  I had a 'bacon burger' with lettuce and tomatoes.  If I had've known that it would've been served as a salad, I would've loaded up on a ton more veggies!

Paleo Kid Lunch - His Input

So the end of the week meal last week didn't go all that great other than him eating the sweet things. Plan C, we ask for his input on his lunch and have him help make it. That's what we did tonight. With just a little bit of redirection here's how we fared.

Snack #1 - Sweet Potato and Apple Muffin + Blackberries minus Blackberries eaten tonight.
Snack #2 - Strawberries (Luckily no allergy to these in his classroom, yet!)
Lunch (Food time) - Peppers, Tomatoes, and Baba Ghanoush, Chicken with Franks, and 4 Dates.

I wonder what they'll think of us sending a kid to school with hot sauce on his chicken. "I swear he asked for it!" will be my answer with thoughts of Dr. Phil going through my mind.

Whole30 Day by Day - Day 30

So day last of this Whole30. Being through it a few times before, I know that having a cheat day or even a cheat meal will lead to almost immediate discomfort. It's incredible how the body feels when you are feeding it great things.

So I'm working nights right now with a few more nights to go. My meal through the night (I guess breakfast?) was 3 Hardboiled Eggs, Celery and Baba Ghanoush (all three leftovers from the little guys school lunch), Almonds, and Chicken.

When I woke up from my nap today, I had some St-Hubert inspired vinegar coleslaw and Pulled Pork from last night.

Supper tonight was Crispy Baked Chicken Wings (a favourite, Chris has some planned for football tomorrow) and a Salad with Avocado. It was made with our Simple Salad Dressing made this time with Balsamic Vinegar.

Paleo Kid - Meal 2

So it turns out the kids have an hour long lunch time and that was reassuring since the little guy can be the slowest eater in the world. We felt better knowing that he would have the time as he is often a grazer.

For the end of the week meal, I packed up two Hardboiled Eggs (Peeled), Carrot sticks, Green Beans, Baba Ghanoush, and a Fruit Leather. Snack #1 was a Cheese Round and Cucumber slices. Snack #2 was some Salami and sliced Peppers.

It looked great and would be a great lunch for him and I (more on that shortly) most days and he would devour it; one egg in about 30 seconds I'm talking.

Well I guess he got a bit distracted since he only ate the Green Beans and Fruit Leather for lunch. Oh, and a mini cheese for a snack. That's it. All the rest came home and became my meal for my shift last night.

Day 1 intake - 3 lbs.
Day 3 intake - 1/4 lbs.

He was so happy though after school. I'd be Staaaaarving (from his favourite Robert Munsch book) after only that.

Whole 30 Day by Day - Day 29

While at work through the night, I had three hard boiled eggs, some chicken, almonds, and yes, a whole cucumber. Coffee was also a requirement during the 12 hour shift. Shift work and paleo eating aren't easy partners with lots of sweet temptations.

When I woke up this afternoon after a few hours sleep, I had some leftover artichoke lemon chicken and a nice large boiled beet.

Supper this evening was our delicious pulled pork with spice rub, and some roasted corriander cauliflower.

And back into work tonight some I'll need to pack up my through the night meal. I'm off to do that now and I'll get that added to my post on Day 30 of the Whole30.

Whole30 Day by Day: Day 27

This morning we ditched our kid at school and hoofed it over to our favourite breakfast spot, Sunset Grill.  I love that they're willing to substitute my toast and homefries for tomatoes.  I had a killer omelette stuffed with baby spinach, mushrooms and bacon.  This is a wonderful combination; my favourite.

After the gym we hit up the market and grabbed some Bratwurst sausages and cooked them up with peppers for lunch.

To celebrate the little guy's first day of school, we went out for dinner.  He consistently asked to go to Sunset Grill for dinner, alas they are a breakfast restaurant, so we coerced him into The Keg.  I had the filet and mixed grilled veggies.

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 26.

Started the day out with some scrambled eggs, bacon and tomatoes.  Notice that the tomatoes are in the shape of a sun?  A sun from my son.  Lovely!

And for lunch we had some hard boiled eggs, kale chips (by request) and apple.

Dinner was roasted chicken thighs and coconut curried cauliflower.  I covered the thighs in the curry sauce and they were pretty divine!

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 25.

I honestly cannot believe that it's Labour Day already.  It seems bizarre, but I swear the weather has changed.  I really feels like fall.  Today was a bit of a lazy day.  I did some baking to freeze for back to school, played lego with the little guy and then played superhero monster (of course).

Started the day with some fried eggs, tomato and bacon.  Easy and delicious.

For lunch we had cucumber and tuna boats with dill pickles on the side.

And dinner was BBQed trout and roasted kale (little man's request).

When we were done, I had a grilled peach and a cup of herbal tea.

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 24.

For breakfast we were in a bit of a hurry, so we reheated some crustless zucchini quiche and had sliced tomatoes on the side.  Easy and quick, so pretty much perfect.

Today was the Toronto Airshow took place, so we went to the Exhibition to grab some food beforehand and then made our way to the seating area.  Yay for job perks!  I went for a lobster roll (I didn't eat the roll) with coleslaw, and the little guy enjoyed some bacon on a stick.  It was pretty delicious.

We made our way home and went for our last swim of the summer, and then lit up the BBQ.  Chris cooked up a flank steak and we had sauteed green beans and guacamole on the side.  The Sunday of labor day weekend is always so bittersweet for me.

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 23.

We had a bit of a sleep in this morning.  The little guy hasn't been feeling well and was up all night last night.  This morning started with mushroom omelettes and tomatoes from the garden.

We weren't incredibly hungry for lunch, so we have some plaeo devils on horseback, avocado and tomato.  I also had a peach when I finished this.  Seems small, but it was pretty satisfying and held me over until dinnertime.

The little guy requested gooey eggs with bacon for dinner.  I was happy to oblige and I made up a batch of roasted kale to go with it.

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 22.

This morning started with some crustless zucchini quiche, bacon and avocado.  Then we headed out to market and loaded up on green beans, peaches, parsnips and carrots.

For lunch I had leftover strata, while the little guy had leftover smoky bacon wrapped chicken thighs; from his lunchbox, to prepare for the start of school in five days.  Nobody here is counting or anything.

And dinner was roasted chicken with roasted carrots and parsnips.  I really didn't feel much like cooking this evening, so I opted for this.  It was fairly simple and pretty delicious.

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 21.

Had a bit of a late start this morning, so started our day with a quick breakfast of scrambled eggs, tomatoes from the garden and some bacon.

Lunch was leftover pulled pork and asian slaw from last night.  The pork was better than last night.  So so good.

And for dinner, I made bacon wrapped smoky chicken thighs from Practical Paleo.  Served with some mushrooms sauteed in coconut oil and some steamed kale.

I'm working on a full book review for Practical Paleo, so hopeful I can get it up tomorrow morning!

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 20.

This morning started with a quick breakfast of scrambled eggs, chorizo and cherry tomatoes.

The little guy and I were out at Ikea for the morning, so for lunch we had leftover strata.  Seriously, it's good on the first day, but so much better a couple days later.

And dinner was pulled pork with an asian slaw.  Pretty much the quintessential summer meal.  I'll get the recipes for both of these soon!

Whole30 Day by Day. Day 19.

We had a later breakfast this morning before heading out to the zoo.  Cooked up some fresh chorizo, scrambled eggs and mixed beans.

Zoo days are my favorite family days.  It's our last week with the little guy before he starts school, so my soft heart got talked into a camel ride.

We went to Costco on the way home where we loaded up on various oils for the kitchen.  Along with a million other various things.

We got home and had lunch.  I realized when I was three quarters of the way through my salad - OH NO! I forgot to take a photo!  But you didn't miss much.  It was leftover turkey on a bed of greens topped with a simple vinaigrette.

Chris spent the afternoon BBQing some ribs and we had them with cauliflower roasted with coriander.
